Deric Raymond

What do you do in your current position?

I currently work for New Jersey Institute of Technology in the Strategic Communications office as a Digital Media Producer.

What is your favorite part about your job?

The favorite part of my job right now is the interaction I get to have with impassioned students. A lot of these students are studying to change people’s lives for the better, and are incredibly smart and dedicated.

What made you choose journalism?

I chose journalism because I’ve always believed that communication is a tool that will never, ever fade away or be replaced — it can only change and morph to fit a context. Studying journalism, I believed, was a path to help me discover how to better communicate, and learn the fundamental concepts of communication that can be applied across many different contexts. Journalism taught me more than how to structure and report a news story, it taught me decision-making, relationship-building, and open-mindedness.

Tell us about the importance of getting involved in student media at TCNJ.

Produce. Always. Find something you like to cover and produce material for it until you are sick of it. Then move onto the next thing, just keep producing. They say you become a professional at something once you’ve spent 10,000 hours doing it — start early and often and no matter what it is, you will be great at it.
