Nonprofit Sector News

Nonprofit Sector News seeks Fall 2021 Interns

Nonprofit Sector News (http://nonprofitsectornews.org), a nonprofit news site, seeks part-time  journalism interns for Fall Semester/Quarter 2021. We produce original journalism (news &  features) on nonprofits of all kinds nationwide, and provide that news (a kind of news service),  free to U.S. news media and the public through a website, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and  Patch.com’s hyperlocal sites nationwide. Emailed newsletters of NSN content, one version for  journalists, one for the public, are planned. (NSN is not a trade publication for nonprofit  employees or boards, unlike Chronicle of Philanthropy, Nonprofit Quarterly, Nonprofit Times, etc.).

Interns are given choices of story ideas and also must propose story ideas. Interns work only  from home and/or their campus, conducting background research/interviews using phones,  email, Zoom/Skype/etc., Internet searches, and website visits. Students are: given introductory  training about covering nonprofits, receive editing/feedback on their writing, ask NSN ques tions as they work, and should suggest news media that their stories be sent to. Interns must  highly motivated, persistent, resourceful, and self-disciplined; ours are not for novices. NSN  fully cooperates with universities that can award academic credit. (We’re a startup nonprofit, so  internships are unpaid, at least for now. Sorry.) Interns also will also be able to use NSN Editor  Dr. Dane S. Claussen as a reference depending on performance.

NSN is especially interested in nonprofits found in almost every U.S. community (Rotary, Good will, animal shelters, chambers of commerce, churches, nonprofit colleges/schools, etc.); non profits affecting every American (ACLU, League of Women Voters, etc.); nonprofits serving mi norities, women, LGBTQ communities, youths, and immigrants; nonprofits of particular interest  to younger Americans; and labor unions.

Print/digital journalism students should send a letter of application, a resume (including at  least three journalism references: professors or editors)—both as email attachments—and scans  of, or links to, your best five stories published/posted in commercial and/or student news  media to NSN. Your application letter must state why you want to intern for NSN and several  story ideas about nonprofits only.

Applications will be reviewed starting in late July, but apply  as quickly as possible. Apply to: Dr. Dane S. Claussen, editor@nonprofitsectornews.org.

Community News Video Reporter

Posted on July 28, 2021

Community News service is looking for short feature or profile videos on Food establishments in Mercer County and slightly beyond. These videos can be shot and edited on a phone. This can be freelance or an internship from Summer to end of Fall semester.

  • The editor is looking for feature stories that highlight the people who make food, telling their stories, and telling the story of their food through that. Interviewing will be a must.
  • These are not restaurant reviews, although the editor will listen to any pitch.
  • Videos should be 2 minutes tops.
  • Restaurants, bakeries, wineries, breweries, farms, apiaries, cheesemakers, markets — anything food and dining related. They are especially interested in stories that highlight different cultures and cuisines.
  • You can pitch ideas to the editor (see below) but there will also be a Google doc with ideas they have.
  • Can do it for internship credit if there were one or two students who really loved this idea. There would be an interview process in that instance.
  • There might be a small freelance budget for this.
  • If a writer could help break through the language barrier — be that language Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, Hindi or anything else — that is of course a great opportunity for us to cover something that we might be missing out on. But as I say, a writer’s passion for and curiosity about a cuisine or a food is what we are really after.
