When you are exempted from something or when something double-counts, please note that your courses must still add up to 32 units.

Three JPW options are required. JPW 499 Internship may be taken in spring, summer, or fall, but not before the junior year. The Journalism major also requires one elective from outside the JPW offerings, by advisement.

Eight courses are required for Liberal Learning, plus a First Seminar. For Liberal Learning, at least one course in each of the following categories is required: Math, a Lab Science, Social Science, History, Literary/Visual/Performing Arts, and World Views/Ways of Knowing. Make sure that your Liberal Learning courses cover the Civic Responsibilities: Gender, Global, and Race & Ethnicity. (Race & Ethnicity can also be fulfilled by JPW 321 Race, Gender, and the News, a JPW option.)

Minors are optional, as are second majors, but note that 12 courses for the major + 8 for Liberal Learning + 1 First Seminar + 3 for foreign language + 1 for Academic Writing = 25, and the requirement for graduation is 32. Most minors are only 5 courses. Most majors are 10-12 courses, but for a student with a double major or a major and an interdisciplinary concentration, the Liberal Learning responsibility is reduced to 7 courses (First Seminar + 1 in each of the categories of Math, Science, Social Science, History, Literary/Visual/Performing Arts, Philosophy/Religion) + Civic Responsibilities.
